dimalang.com – Pantai Tanjung Penyu is a south-coast beach in Tambak, Sitiarjo village, Sumbermanjing Wetan, Malang Regency, East Java. From the center of Malang city it is about 60 to 65 kilometers, and the drive takes close to two hours. It sits on the Jalur Lintas Selatan, the coastal road, near Goa Cina, Teluk Asmara, and Balekambang.
People camp on the sand, use two sunset stands, and wade in one sheltered pocket of water. The open beach faces the Indian Ocean. The waves get big.
The name comes from a coral outcrop and a small island that visitors describe as turtle-shaped. That island breaks part of the swell. In a May 2025 visit, DeMalang found a wading spot behind it, with a lifeguard post nearby. An April 2026 traveler put the calmer water on the left: a partial barrier, like the one at Batu Bengkung, that does not close off the whole shore. At a middle tide it holds enough water for a child to paddle. At low tide it drains. When the swell is up, that same traveler stayed on the wet sand. Kompas, after a September 2024 visit, called the waves large enough for surfing. A February 2026 visitor wrote that some stretches are closed to swimming. Stay with children at the edge of the water.

A hill splits the beach into an east side and a west side. Each side has a sunset stand. The west stand is at the far western end, and it is also worth a look after dark if you are camping. The hill between them is the viewpoint people walk up. In April 2026 the far right of the beach was still quiet while the center and the left were already full of tents. A boat was parked on top of that hill. You can walk there, or drive if you turn right early. Most visitors do not. On a coral hill, Kompas photographed replica piano and cello statues set up as a photo spot, with a wider view of the water behind them. That was September 2024, so check that the statues are still there.
Camping is what fills the beach. On weekends the tents are up by mid-morning. A weekday, or an arrival around 7 or 8 a.m., is quieter. Bring your own tent, or rent one. DeMalang reported rentals from Rp35,000 in May 2025, with basic gear included. There is room for campervans, and a beach volleyball court. Yadi, a public-relations officer for the beach, told TIMES Indonesia that alcohol and sound systems are banned. The managers want the shore kept quiet.

Toilets and rinse showers are free and scattered around the beach. One traveler found the shower and the toilet in the same room, so you queue with people who are washing. A prayer room is on site. Gazebos are there, and a 2026 write-up says they are free to use. TIMES Indonesia also lists a photo booth, beach umbrellas, and bean bags. The Ministry of Tourism registry gives the parking area as 2 hectares, with space for about 500 motorcycles, 500 cars, and 50 buses. That same registry says there is no toilet for disabled visitors or older people. On the 2025 visit, DeMalang found almost no evacuation signs. The beach is listed as open 24 hours. A January 2026 visitor also mentioned paid Wi-Fi vouchers and rows of food stalls.
The last part of the drive is the rough one. A February 2026 visitor put it at about 200 meters of macadam, coarse enough to puncture a tire. Cars, motorcycles, and at least one Damri bus still get through. The smoother approach is from the Balekambang junction: turn left and continue to Tanjung Penyu. The road in from Bantur has a worse reputation. A Damri bus was seen entering the beach around 10 a.m. The passenger thought it had left Malang near 7 a.m. Published Damri fares do not agree from one article to the next, so check the DAMRI app on the day. Bring rupiah cash. The ministry profile lists cash, cards, and QR, but visitor reports say the booth and the stalls expect notes.

Use the price visitors actually paid in 2026. In February and April 2026 that was Rp15,000 per person to enter and Rp10,000 to park a car. A Google review quoted in June 2025 already had the same entry price, plus Rp10,000 extra to take a car into the camping area. Kompas in September 2024, and the ministry registry, still show Rp10,000 entry. Ask which figure is on the board.
Dollar figures below use Bank Indonesia’s JISDOR rate on 23 October 2026, Rp18,069 to the US dollar, rounded to the nearest five cents. The booth will not take dollars.

Food is a line of stalls run by people from the village, facing the water. DeMalang said the food court stays open late and runs through the night on weekends. Menus include grilled fish, sweet-sour squid, sweet-sour shrimp, young coconut, fried banana, tahu walik (fried tofu with a filling), instant noodles, smashed fried chicken with chili, and bakso, the meatball soup. Most stalls post a price list. On holidays the queue is long and the grilled fish runs out. The stall listed as IKAN BAKAR TANJUNG PENYU is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. A July 2024 review said the grilled fish there started at Rp55,000. Another reviewer ordered tuna. A third arrived near dusk, found the fish gone, and liked the shrimp. One order of corn smelled off. Ask what is still on the grill before you sit down.
Cleaners walk the beach, and there are bins. Visitors still leave trash. Photos, and Malang travel vlogger Niko Daniar in comments to DeMalang, describe the sand as white and the water as clear. From a drone, he said, it reminded him of Raja Ampat. Weekends are no longer the empty beach that 2024 articles described. The quiet piece is the far-right corner past the hill, on foot, in the morning. A 2026 guide also says the mosquitoes pick up after dark.
